(AP) — Ellen Gilchrist, a National Book Award winner whose short stories and novels drew on the complexities of people and places in the American South, has died. An obituary from her family said Gilchrist died Tuesday in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, where she had lived in her final years. “Victory Over Japan,” a collection of short stories set in Mississippi and Arkansas, was awarded the National Book Award for fiction in 1984. She said at the Mississippi Book Festival that she wrote the story at a time when she and her friends were having conversations about abortion versus adoption. Gilchrist's survivors include her sons Marshall Peteet Walker, Jr., Garth Gilchrist Walker and Pierre Gautier Walker; her brother Robert Alford Gilchrist; 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

By Nia Williams(Reuters) - Six people were killed after a small plane carrying Rio Tinto workers crashed near Fort Smith in Canada's remote Northwest Territories (NWT), the NWT Coroner Service said on Wednesday. Four passengers and two North Western Air Lease crew members died in the crash, Chief Coroner Garth Eggenberger said in a statement, adding the plane had been travelling from Fort Smith en route to the Diavik Diamond Mine. There was one survivor who was treated at the Fort Smith Health Centre before being taken to hospital in the provincial capital Yellowknife. Rio Tinto Chief Executive Jakob Stausholm said in a statement on Tuesday night that the company was devastated by the crash. In response to the crash, Fort Smith Health Centre activated its mass casualty protocol around 8:50 a.m. on Tuesday, according to Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority. The crash also drew responses from the Royal Canadian Mounted Patrol, the Canadian Rangers and the Royal Canadian Air Force. Investigators with the Northwest Territories coroner’s office and the Transportation Safety Board were also sent to Fort Smith following the crash. Following the crash Tuesday morning, Fort Smith officials asked to stay away from the crash site to allow officials to respond. “Please be advised that an aviation incident occurred this morning,” the town of Fort Smith said in a post on Facebook.

YouTube is taking steps to fight against medical misinformation, especially when it comes to finding immediate tips on how to handle an emergency. YouTube users in the U.S. can find videos on 12 topics, including CPR, seizures, choking, bleeding and psychosis. The videos will not contain ads, which means Google -owned YouTube won't make money from them, Graham said. Content moderation has long been a challenge for YouTube, which removes videos if they're found to be in violation of the company's guidelines. Even as the pandemic has subsided, medical misinformation continues to proliferate.

The couple shared Thursday their son Dex, 32, died after suffering an “accidental drug overdose,” according to an Instagram post. “To anyone struggling with addiction or who loves someone struggling with addiction, you are in our hearts and prayers,” Dana Carvey wrote in the Instagram post.
